The story is about a group of girls who attend Lillian Girls’ Academy, a Catholic school in Japan. Lillian Academy’s Student Council is called the Mountain Lily Council. The Council is composed of three girls with flower titles: Rosa Gigantea (white), Rosa Sinensis (red), and Rosa Foetida (yellow). The heroine of the story, Fukuzawa Yumi, is a student at the academy, who is also the ‘petite soeur’ of Sachiko (the “Rosa Shinensis en bouton”). The series focuses on the lives of the Mountain Lily Council members, how they interact with each other, and also with the local boys’ school, which Yumi’s brother attends.

Upon reaching the train station to death, a dejected soul is informed that he is lucky and will have another chance at life. He is placed in the body of a 14-year-old boy named Kobayashi Makoto, who has just committed suicide. Watched over by a neutral spirit named Purapura, the soul must figure out what his greatest sin and mistake in his former life was before his time limit in Makoto’s body runs out. He also has a number of other lesser duties he must complete, such as understanding what led Makoto to commit suicide in the first place and learning how to enjoy his second chance at life.
The story is set in a strangely streamlined isolated prison with unusual inmates a seemingly honest and good young man, a sensual woman, a former military middle-aged man, a young female otaku, a mysterious old man, and a cat. One day, a sudden power outage opens the locks to all cells and everyone is set free. However, all of the guards are missing, and the prisoners cannot find any exits. While the old man performs a bizarre act, an unusual phenomenon befalls the prison and the prisoners within.

Background: Miyamae Kanako, a high school girl, who is allergic to boys, enrols in an all-girls school, hoping to find a female romantic partner. However, her ideal candidate, Shidou Mariya, turns out to be a mischievous cross-dressing boy, who together with his sarcastic maid Shinouji Matsurika, give Kanako really difficult times.
Time passes and Kanako still fantasizes about her ideal female romantic partner(s), to no avail, alas. Living in the same room at the dormitory Mariya and his outspoken maid keep on challenging Kanako’s sense of reality on a daily basis.
The story begins after mysterious creatures named Archons suddenly appear in the world. Humanity faces the threat of annihilation from these creatures. Only the Chalice, the source of humanity, can defeat the powerful Archons. So, the humans assemble an Archon-slaying unit from fighters who have the ability to bring forth the Chalice to fight. The ones chosen to fight the Archons with the Chalice as their weapon are called Goulart Knights.
